mirragma gunugurra-wa (bamboo raft) /

GARUWA and Artify partnered in the delivery of this special project, commissioned by the City of Darwin. Artists Uncle Roque Lee and Trent Lee have created a captivating sculpture titled 'mirragma gunugurr-wa' that reflects on the journeys of Larrakia people.

mirragma gunugurra-wa (bamboo raft in the Larrakia language) brings together two old stories deeply connected to this site in Darwin. This artwork reflects the journeys of Larrakia people travelling across the bay for ceremony, and ancient tales of mermaids inhabiting these waters. Creating an interactive experience that brings these stories to life - it is both engaging and reflective — and brings the rich, evocative history and culture of this place to the fore.

The Larrakia people used many ways to travel over land and particularly the sea. To travel across the harbour the Larrakia used rafts of different shapes and sizes. Bamboo was a popular choice because it floated well and there was plenty of it.

The interactive experience builds on Larrakia cultural revitalisation and knowledge sharing, celebrating the rich cultural and historical stories of Darwin’s Traditional Owners.
