Montario Quarter /
In 2021 Artify was been engaged by DevelopmentWA to provide Public Art Consultancy services for the Monatrio Quarter Development in Shenton Park.
The native bushland and parkland spaces within the Woodland precinct provide locations for interpretive artworks, including sculptures and illustrative patterns embedded into shelter structures and surfaces. Through public art, we can encapsulate, re-imagine and re-purpose important connections that the Woodland Precinct has offered its inhabitants both past and present.
Noongar artists Julianne Wade, Marcia McGuire and Melissa Spillman, with the support of Artify, UAP, Urbis were shortlisted to develop concept designs for the Montario Quarter Woodland Precinct public artworks. A three-day professional development workshop took place at Urbis’ studio where the artists were supported to expand on their existing art practice and interests, and develop 2D and 3D concept designs for the project.
Julianne Wade has been selected for a major sculptural commission titled Balga Koort - a cast aluminium sculpture etched with intricate designs of the balga tree. Julianne recently spent some time with the team at UAP at their workshop in Brisbane, to further refine and develop her sculpture as it goes into fabrication.
Marcia and Melissa were also selected to develop integrated designs for feature screens within the precinct.
Embedding public art is central to Montario Quarter’s community building, public realm and place making direction, contributing to community vibrancy through visitor attraction, place activation, supporting local commercial and retail uses and celebrating the many people, memories and places that have been part of the journey, past and present. The public art approach seeks to bring these key elements together through a cohesive and strategic response that embraces past and future built form, the unique public realm design direction and the many intended future uses.
As the appointed Public Art Coordinator, Artify is responsible managing and facilitating the commissioning process of the Montario Quarter Public Art Fund, leading the development of public art strategies, artist briefs, artist procurement processes and project managing the delivery of artworks through to completion.
